Friendship, Alcohol, and Courting

It was about a year since my marriage broke down and I had no plans to date anyone. It was clear in my head that this relationship stuff was not for me. However I am frequently haunted by this cocky demon who also happens to be my best friend, he was the one who made a toast at my bachelor party about how good I and my ex were as a couple and how he knew from within that we were made for each other. The same guy again drank with me the night I and my ex separated. His first words were ‘I knew she was narcissistic passive-aggressive entitled poison ivy from the day I first met her but could not gather the courage to break your heart. I just prayed to God every day that I was wrong.’ I gave him a death stare, and then we both looked each other in the eyes for a few seconds and started laughing.

A couple of weeks back, we were at a bar, again, drinking together. Suddenly, he noticed her, — a beautiful, sophisticated big city girl sitting alone at the corner table, I guess she was waiting for someone. He started pushing me to approach her, but I was reluctant as I didn’t want to date anyone, moreover, I knew she was way out of my league, he knew it and I knew that she would also know it too.
